The Power Has Gone Out – What to Do First

At some time or another most people have experienced a power outage. The first thing to do is to figure out if the problem has to do with just your house or if the entire neighborhood is without power. If the power went out in your entire home and neighbors are without power too, then its best to call your electric company and report it.

A neighborhood power outage can be caused by many different things and usually has something to do with the weather conditions. If this happens in the winter time you will want to make sure you put on layers of clothes to keep you warm. Another thing to remember is to try not to open and close your freezer and refrigerator too much. The food inside will stay cold for hours if you keep it closed. Usually, depending on the problem, the power will be turned back on as quickly as possible.

If you have power in part of your house then most likely the problem has something to do with your house’s wiring. Usually when the power goes out it is caused by a loose wire, an overloaded circuit or a short circuit. For example, if the power went out when using an electric heater or something that use a lot of electrical current it usually means you overloaded the circuit. You can check your circuit panel to see if a fuse blew out or if the breaker was tripped.

You will want to go to the circuit panel and flipped the breaker back on or replace the blown fuse. If after doing this you still are without power you probably have a more serious problem. In that case it is better to call in an electrician to fix the problem for you.
